Hey, Ashevillians ā with winter on the way weather you like it or not, we couldnāt resist peeping at some of the major weather trends headed our way.
Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrationās Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect for Dec., Jan., + Feb. While exact weather conditions like snowfall typically canāt be predicted more than a week in advance, accurate seasonal outlooks can help communities prepare for what winter will bring. Hereās whatās coming in our city:

Think warm. This winter, there is a 40-50% chance that Ashevilleās temperatures will be higher than normal, possibly a 50-60% chance.

By the month: December
- Ashevilleās average low-temperature in December is 33.8Ā°F, so we might see more days this year closer to the average high-temperature ā 48.4Ā°F ā because of the anticipated temp rise. DYK? December is the month with the most rainfall in Asheville with 3.54 inches over 10 rainfall days + the snowiest month with 4.21 inches over 2.1 days.
By the month: January
- Ashevilleās lows in January are 27.7Ā°F on average, with highs of 44.1Ā°F. January tends to be Ashevilleās coldest month, but with the chance of higher temperatures this season, we might see warmer days. Bonus: here are the NOAAās winter safety tips. āļø
By the month: February
- Historically, February gets a little warmer in Asheville with an average low-temperature of 31.6Ā°F + an average high-temperature of 48.9Ā°F, so expect to be closer to those highs. Fun fact: The average amount of sunshine on a February day in Asheville is 6.9 hours.

- Public hearings on the corridor studies ā recently proposed amendments to the āAsheville in Mobilityā plan submitted by Asheville on Bikes ā will continue on Dec. 14. These studies support the addition of pedestrian crosswalks + protected bike lanes, like those already in the River Arts District. š² (WLOS)

- $124.4 million. The amount of state recovery funds the 11 WNC counties most impacted by Tropical Depression Fred will receive. - Local kombucha purveyors Buchi shared a recipe for a sweet + tart kombucha apple butter where the apples are simmered in kombucha instead of water. We know what weāll be spreading on biscuits this holiday season. š
Sports
- The UNCAās menās basketball team lost 53-72 to UNC Chapel Hill Tuesday night. The Bulldogs managed to force 18 turnovers and turned those into 19 points. The loss moves UNC Asheville's record to 2-3 overall, and the team will be back on the home court this Sunday hosting St. Andrews. š
