Today, we’re pitching an answer to the age-old, largely contested question — what is the best city in North Carolina and why? (Spoiler alert: it’s Asheville.)
Editor Brook here, and as a born + bred WNC native, I must say: Asheville is the bee’s knees and every other city in the state pales in comparison.

It simply does not get any better or more beautiful than this. I Photo by @matty.media

To show that I’m fair, I’ll start with some of the good things that other Tar Heel cities offer:
- Raleigh | Professional opportunities aplenty + a killer food scene.
- Greensboro | Quirky museums and important historic sites (like the International Civil Rights Center).
- Charlotte | Historical architecture and home to the NFL's Carolina Panthers and the NBA's Charlotte Hornets.
- Wilmington | Beaches and a hotspot for the movie/TV industry.
See? Totally impartial + willing to say that these cities are great — just not as great as ours. Now, why Asheville is the best:

*Note: this article is meant to be lighthearted + goofy. While we do believe that Asheville is the best city in NC, we also love all of the other cities mentioned and know that each one has its own unique reasons for being wonderful.

You may already be aware that opossums are the Tar Heel state’s official marsupial. But did you know that NC had its own celebrity possum named Slow Poke?
Named the “prettiest possum” at a 1970 competition, Slow Poke was to be given to then-governor Bob Scott, who decided to serve a banquet with Slow Poke as the main course when he discovered a guest had never eaten possum.
Thankfully, Slow Poke was saved after the governor received hundreds of calls + letters protesting his proposed possum feast, which lead to Scott granting Slow Poke clemency. The possum was then turned over to the North Carolina Wildlife Commission.
Want more possum facts? Peep our piece on these cool little critters.
