- Well Played Board Game Cafe plans to reopen this winter in the South Slope’s historic Chrysler building at 162 Coxe Ave. The new space is more than double the size of its former location and features a bigger kitchen + bar (which also means a new food and drink menu). - After a US Forest Service ban on camping, fires, and other uses earlier this year, beloved mountaintop bald Max Patch is returning to its natural state. In addition to the ban, officials attribute its recovery to education + cleanup efforts from individuals and other area organizations like Save Our Smokies. ⛰️ (Asheville Citizen-Times)

- Little Jumbo + The Golden Pineapple are collaborating to raise funds for Our VOICE. Each bar has created its own version of the classic Brandy Crusta cocktail to be served throughout the month of October, with $1 from every drink sold to Our VOICE. 🥃

- The Minority Medical Mentoring Program is accepting applications from rising high school seniors who are members of BIPOC communities in Asheville + Buncombe County. Students receive hands-on experience and mentorship to help them pursue careers in healthcare. Apply through Dec. 11. 🩺

Feel Good
- Transylvania County-based nonprofit TVS sells + makes food items ranging from bakery mix to non-fat dry milk for food pantries across the USA. The org also provides jobs to people with historic barriers to employment — half of its 200 employees have a disability. Get the scoop here. (WLOS)

- Have unused or expired meds? Safely dispose of them at a drive thru drug take back event on Sat., Oct. 23 from 10 a.m.-2p.m. Turn the meds in at 3 different spots: the Sheriff’s Satellite Office (339 New Leicester Hwy.), Asheville Outlets (800 Brevard Rd.) + Mission Hospital (1 Hospital Dr.). 💊
Coronavirus
- For the third straight week, COVID-19 cases have declined in Buncombe County. The positivity percentage has also decreased from ~9% to 6.7%. As of Oct. 5, there are 216 cases per 100,000 per week, and school-aged children make up approximately 24.5% of new cases. See more of the latest data.
WNC is home to multiple dahlia gardens, shows + fests, but it wasn’t until today that we learned about their culinary uses from the Utopian Seed Project, an org that trials crops in the Southeast to support genetic diversity in farming + food.
The nonprofit mentioned sampling dahlia chips from a vendor at a recent Chow Chow event and wondered who the maker is. If any of y’all know, will you holler at us and let us know? We want to try them, too. 🌺

Thanks to everyone who shared where and if they would like to see an alcohol-friendly social district in the Asheville area.
Of more than 400 votes, 48.3% of y'all said the South Slope would be a good spot, while 36.9% said none of the above. Both Biltmore Village and Haywood Rd. got sparse support, earning 5.9% and 8.8%, respectively.
