Why is digging taking place near Pisgah National Forest entrance?

At the intersection of 276 just past the intersection with 64, it appears an archeological dig is taking place. Earlier, the trees were removed from the lot and silt fencing put up around the land. Can you investigate and find out what’s going on," wrote a viewer named Rick wrote to Ask 13. (Photo credit: WLOS staff)

A viewer noticed some digging taking place near Pisgah National Forest and wants to know what's happening.

The N.C. Department of Transportation and other partners are conducting environmental and other reviews of the site, according to a spokesperson for NCDOT. They said it is a required step before construction can begin on a pedestrian bridge over the Davidson River in Pisgah Forest.

The bridge will connect the Estatoe Trail to U.S. 276 and provide access for cyclists and pedestrians to local shops and eateries.

Construction is scheduled to start in fall 2024 and cost an estimated $930,000.

The bridge will be made of prefabricated steel, and its approximate dimensions are 125 feet long and 10 feet wide.

The city of Brevard has contributed to the design and a portion of the funds. The project is a joint effort between NCDOT, city of Brevard, U.S. Forest Service and the Land of Sky Rural Planning Organization.
